Green Schools!
Excitement is blooming in our school as we work towards achieving our 10th Green Schools Flag, with a special focus on Biodiversity! Our students have been busy exploring, planting and discovering the wonderful variety of life right here in our school grounds.
Recently, the children became real-life nature detectives, carrying out a biodiversity survey around the school. They identified a wide range of plants and species, learning just how rich and diverse our local environment truly is.
One of our proudest projects so far has been the creation of a beautiful bee-friendly flowerbed. After researching which flowers are most attractive to bees, the children carefully selected and planted a variety of pollinator-friendly plants. We’re already seeing the buzz of activity as bees visit their new favourite spot!
Our green fingers didn’t stop there. In our school vegetable garden, the children have planted potatoes and onions, learning first-hand how food grows and the care it takes to nurture it from seed to harvest.
We have also been thinking about where our food comes from. The children explored the idea of “food miles” and discovered how far some of our food travels before it reaches our plates. By examining food packaging, they became food detectives once again, tracing the journey of everyday items and learning about the environmental impact of transporting food across the world.
Through these hands-on activities, our students are not only learning about biodiversity but are also developing a deeper appreciation for nature and the importance of caring for our planet.
